Mint Hill Residents,

Today, April 22, 2024, is Earth Day and I encourage the residents of Mint Hill to take the following Earth Day Pledge.

I promise to conserve Earth’s resources and reduce my waste and pledge to take the following actions in my life to help protect the earth.  I promise to plant native trees and pollinator flowers. I promise to pick up trash in the parks. I promise not to litter. I promise to recycle.

We can reduce our consumption and become more sustainable by not leaving the water running when not in use.  Carpooling or walking whenever possible.  We can use reusable water bottles, coffee mugs, and shopping bags to decrease waste.  We can recycle to reduce the amount of waste we produce by rinsing out cans, plastic containers, bottles and placing them in our blue recycling container.  Americans purchase about 50 billion water bottles per year, averaging about 13 bottles per month for every person in the U.S.! That means by using a reusable water bottle, you could save an average of 156 plastic bottles annually.

Earth Day is a reminder that our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint needs to be front and center year-round.  Small actions bring big outcomes.

All seniors (60 years and older) are eligible for a NC Senior Tar Heel card for free entrance into many school sporting events including events at Independence High School.  Send an email to Tiffany McDougal at tiffany.mcdougald@dhhs.nc.gov and include name, address, zip code and phone number.

This week’s featured employee is Sergeant Cassandra Scott.  This year the Mint Hill Police Department held its annual awards banquet and recognized Sergeant Scott as their Employee of the Year.  Not only has she gone above and beyond in her day-to-day duties, but she has also shown exceptional passion and initiative by raising funds for Special Olympics North Carolina.  Her selfless efforts have not only inspired everyone around her but have also touched the lives of countless individuals.  Congratulations to Sergeant Scott for her dedication, service, and commitment in making a difference in the Town of Mint Hill.

Have a great week!  I hope to see you around town.

Brad Simmons
Mint Hill Mayor
